Movies are separated into diverse categories. These categories are genres, and they classify movies by their content and what type of strategies they use to engage with the audience. Some of these genres include

  • Comedy
  • Horror/Thriller
  • Action
  • Fantasy
  • Sci-fi, and others.
Each genre structures movies differently, uses different shot types and editing strategies, and overall change the dynamic. For example, comedy movies may use over the top sound effects and dialogue with scenery shots including both characters having a conversation and making jokes. On the other hand, action movies may use sound effects like bullets and explosions, using crane shots and/or handheld shots. , with intense dialogue and fast-paced movements.

Genres help distinguish movies from one another, given the fact that, as mentioned earlier, each genre uses different ways to entertain their audiences. By finding out what the genre of a movie is, you can scope out how the plot of the movie and the overall mood of it will be. For instance, if you know that the movie you will watch is a horror movie, you will be prepared for jumpscares and suspenseful scenes, and it is highly likely that there will be a scene where you will go "Why are you going towards the sound?! Oh my goddddd stop going toward the killer!" since almost every horror movie includes a scene of this type. Finding the genre of a movie is not necessary to enjoy it, but it can add onto the experience and make it more enjoyable for you!
